Linux Mint 20.3 released with brand new Xapp called Thingy, and rounded corners

The Linux Mint project has finally announced the release of Linux Mint 20.3. The new upgrade is available in three flavours: Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. The release notes for each edition are more or less the same but the Cinnamon edition comes with Cinnamon 5.2 which includes a new calendar widget in the clock menu.

In this update, the Hypnotix IPTV player has been improved with dark mode support and a new set of flags for the different countries, it also includes a search function to quickly jump to TV channels, movies, and series. Linux Mint users also get a new Xapp called Thingy, a document manager that gives quick access to your favourite and recently opened documents. One of the nice features of Thingy is that it can track your reading progress so you can resume reading next time.

Linux Mint 20.3 users will notice right away that the desktop windows come with larger title bar buttons, rounded corners, a cleaner theme, and support for dark mode. The larger window buttons ensure that window management is easier and help to prevent misclicks. For the complete list of changes in this upgrade, check out the What’s New page.

Linux Mint 20.3 is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and as such will receive updates until April 2025. It’s unlikely that you’ll still be running this version of Mint by 2025, however, as Linux Mint 21 is due out around May and Linux Mint 22 should drop sometime in 2024. If you’re on any older Linux Mint 20.x release, be on the lookout for an upgrade path opening up through the update manager.
