Live-action trailer for 'Halo 5: Guardians' reveals Master Chief "died in the line of duty"

Just under a month from now, on October 27, Microsoft will launch Halo 5: Guardians, the latest title in its hugely popular gaming series. Unlike the video Microsoft released last week - which showed a cinematic sequence that sets up the second mission in the game - its new trailer is live-action all the way. But in it, we"re told that the series" protagonist, Master Chief, has met a tragic and untimely end.

The new teaser trailer - which was shown for the first time on NBC last night - opens in a workers" canteen on an industrial complex, over five hundred years in the future, as UNSC Press Secretary Penelope Boren delivers a statement on TV:

We have just received confirmation from Meridian that on October 27, 2560, Spartan-117 - the man most commonly known as the "Master Chief" - died in the line of duty.

Out of respect to those who may have lost loved ones in the event, we are holding back the complete account.

The Master Chief would never have agreed to special treatment to be elevated above anyone else, but we must acknowledge the loss we have all - our entire species - suffered today. And we must fight together today, as he fought; we must end this, not be ended by it.

And as the trailer ends, amid scenes of massive devastation, we see the Chief himself, clearly not in the best of shape. Of course, there"s surely more to all this than meets the eye - and as the launch date of Halo 5: Guardians draws ever closer, we won"t have to wait too long to find out more.
