Just over a year after they were unveiled, Microsoft"s Windows 10 Mobile flagships are approaching the end of their retail lives. In the UK, Microsoft and Amazon ran out of stock of the Lumia 950 six weeks ago; and after slashing the price of the Lumia 950 XL to £289 last month - its lowest price ever for British buyers - Microsoft depleted its stock of that device too.
Both handsets remain available from some other retailers, but with supplies now limited, costs are high. Carphone Warehouse, for example, has raised the price of the Lumia 950 back up to £399.99, after reducing it to £359.99 a few months ago. A Google Shopping search shows just one retailer now offering the Lumia 950 for less than £400, unless you"re willing to buy a used model.
But if you"re keen to get your hands on the Lumia 950, and you don"t want to pay such high prices - especially given that Microsoft officially cut its price to just £249 in September - you might be interested in a deal available from Expansys.
The retailer is currently offering the Lumia 950 with dual-SIM support - a rarity in the UK - for £279.99, including free delivery. Its key specs include:
- 5.2-inch AMOLED with Quad HD (2560x1440px) resolution
- Hexa-core 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor
- 3GB RAM
- 32GB onboard storage (plus microSD card slot)
- 20MP PureView rear camera with auto focus, 6-lens optics, triple-LED flash, optical image stabilization and 4K video recording at 30fps
- 5MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens and 1080p video recording
- Bluetooth 4.1
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct support
- Qi wireless charging
- 3000mAh battery
- USB 3.1 port with Type-C connector
- 145 x 73.2 x 8.2mm; 150g
There is one catch though - this particular model is sold with an EU plug, so you"ll need an adaptor, but it does come with a European warranty that includes full cover in the United Kingdom.
Expansys is also offering the Microsoft Display Dock for £62.99; that"s £17 less than the recommend retail price - but if you shop around, you may be able to find it elsewhere for a good deal less. The Display Dock supports Windows 10 Mobile"s Continuum mode - a defining feature of the OS, which allows owners to use a mouse and keyboard with the device when connected to a larger display, including a desktop-style Start menu and interface.
