Los Angeles will soon be able to use the first of Elon Musk's tunnels

Elon Musk has shaken up the world in a variety of ways recently, from Tesla"s impressive electric truck to the successful launch of the Falcon Heavy by SpaceX, which itself had a Tesla Roadster inside.

Another one of the entrepreneur"s investments is The Boring Company, a tunnel-digging company focused on enabling faster and cheaper underground transportation. The company has been working on tunnels under the city of Los Angeles for a while now, and on Thursday Musk used Instagram to announce that the construction of the first of these tunnels under the city is nearly finished.

First Boring Company tunnel under LA almost done! Pending final regulatory approvals, we will be offering free rides to the public in a few months. Super huge thanks to everyone that helped with this project. Strong support from public, elected officials & regulators is critical to success. As mentioned in prior posts, once fully operational (demo system rides will be free), the system will always give priority to pods for pedestrians & cyclists for less than the cost of a bus ticket.

The tunnels will be used for Musk"s Loop transportation system and, along with the announcement, the CEO of The Boring Company promised that free rides will be offered to the public in a few months, once the company obtains final regulatory approvals. He further re-affirmed that tickets will give priority to pedestrians and bicycles over cars, and that tickets will cost less than that of a bus ride.

In order to help fund the project, The Boring Company unveiled a flamethrower earlier this year which cost US$500, and Musk has also been working on making the tunneling process significantly cheaper, partially by making it faster and more efficient. Of course, it remains to be seen as to how effective the Loop system ends up being in the long term.
