Microsoft"s Lumia 550 - its new entry-level Windows 10 Mobile handset - went on sale in various markets, including the UK, just over two weeks ago. A week later, Carphone Warehouse, the UK"s largest independent handset retailer, cut £10 off the price of the 550 on contract-free pay-as-you-go (PAYG) plans - and now it"s slashed its prices even further.
Its latest discount cuts a further £10 off the Lumia 550"s price, bringing it down to £49.99, when purchased with a new PAYG SIM with £10 of credit on EE or Virgin Media, or £20 on O2. On Vodafone, however, the handset"s price remains at £69.99, plus a mandatory £20 PAYG credit.
That means that you can now buy the Lumia 550 for as little as £59.99 all-in - saving you £40 on the full SIM-free cost of the device. And given that almost every phone sold by Carphone Warehouse is network-unlocked anyway, it makes sense to choose the cheapest option available.
But you can save even more on the Lumia 550 if you"re already a PAYG customer, with up to 50% off the previous upgrade cost of £59.99. Virgin Media customers can upgrade for £29.99, while those on O2 and Vodafone can do so for £34.99.
The Lumia 550"s key specs include:
- 4.7-inch LCD with HD (1280x720px) resolution
- Quad-core 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support up to 200GB)
- 5MP rear camera with auto-focus and LED flash (720p video recording at 30fps)
- 2MP front-facing camera (VGA video)
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.1
- USB 2.0 with Type-B connector
- 4G LTE connectivity
- nanoSIM
- 2100mAh battery
- 136.1 x 67.8 x 9.9mm; 142g
It"s also worth noting that Carphone Warehouse is the only UK retailer to be offering the Lumia 550 in white. The only other colour option available elsewhere is black - and even the Microsoft Store doesn"t sell the white version.
It"s not clear how long this latest discount will last, but the Carphone Warehouse site notes that it "must end soon".
