A week after its launch, internet portal Lycos has decided to pull the download of its controversial spam fighting screensaver. Dubbed "Makelovenotspam", the Lycos screensaver was designed to flood known spam servers with useless traffic, preventing them from performing their primary function. The move came after Lycos received mass criticism from home users and internet experts over the last few days.
Lycos originally defended the legality of the screensaver, stating that it was designed to simply saturate spam servers to the point just before a Denial of Service (DoS) attack would have occured. A spokesperson for Lycos commented that the screensaver was pulled while it "...deals with hosting and management issues," and that it was too early to say when, or even if, the screensaver would ever be offered for download again.
