Yesterday, Apple released macOS Sierra 10.12.1 which, intended primarily as a security update is available for devices running the macOS operating system.
Accidentally or intentionally, the update also appears to contain a bit of an easter egg for those seeking information about upcoming MacBook models.
Buried deep within the OS update are images that are most likely intended to form part of macOS"s user help dialog information, which appear when changing settings in the System Preferences app. The reason they"re interesting is that they apparently show one variant of a new MacBook Pro.
Along the top of the keyboard, MacBooks traditionally have a row of function keys. But, in the freshly discovered images, the function keys have been replaced by what is assumed to be an OLED display.
The display shown above appears to have been intended as a multi-functioning, touch sensitive addition to the keyboard to provide context-aware controls. The image shows a cancel button and an Apple Pay logo with a prompt to place a finger over a Touch ID sensor embedded into the device.
Presumably, if using an application within macOS, the OLED display will be available as an extension of the main interface, making quick, customizable buttons available as part of the keyboard experience.
In addition to the almost certain confirmation of an OLED display and a Touch ID sensor, the leak may also have unearthed an upcoming "Escapegate" saga, as some users on Twitter have noted that the new keyboard appears to lack an Escape key.
Either way, we shall find out this Thursday, at Apple"s invitation-only launch event.
