At Apple"s iPhone 7 launch event today, the company noted that both watchOS 3 and iOS 10 would be made available via software update on September 13. While we still don"t know when tvOS 10 will ship, the company"s macOS page shows that it will be made available on September 20.
This will be the first version of Apple"s desktop operating system since OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion that doesn"t support all of the machines that its predecessor did. Here"s what you"ll need to install macOS 10.12 Sierra:
- MacBook - late 2009 or later
- iMac - late 2009 or later
- MacBook Air - 2010 or later
- MacBook Pro - 2010 or later
- Mac Mini - 2010 or later
- Mac Pro - 2010 or later
macOS Sierra contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is Siri, the voice assistant that came to iPhones with iOS 5 and the iPhone 4s. You"ll also find neat new tricks, such as the ability to unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch, assuming that you have two-factor authentication enabled on your Apple account.
Sierra is a free upgrade, and as always, you"ll be able to grab it through the Mac App Store.
