Twelve major broadcasting groups, Belo Corp., Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Fox, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., ION Television, Media General Inc., Meredith Corp., NBC, Post-Newsweek Stations Inc. and Raycom Media, have teamed up to create a mobile broadcasting service.
The service will utilize existing broadcast spectrum and allow member companies to provide content to mobile devices, including live and on-demand video, local and national news from print and electronic sources, as well as sports and entertainment programming.
The service will employ ATSC-M/H, an open broadcast transmission system developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) specifically for mobile devices. ATSC-M/H uses 19.39 Mbit/s ATSC 8VSB stream. The service would be free to air, as are regular broadcast signals
Currently there are only a few ATSC-M/H devices on on the market because there are very few stations that broadcast the signal. But if it starts to take off you can expect it to be more widely available. The iPad would be a perfect example of a device that could take advantage of this service if it supported ATSC-M/H.
