In a press release primarily covering earnings results, Innelec Multimedia, which serves as the French distributor for major brands including Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, let slip some interesting information regarding the rumored PlayStation 4 "Neo", which some have nicknamed the "PS4.5".
For companies with a fiscal year spanning from April through March the following year, this is roughly the time of year when financial results are disclosed to shareholders and the public. Normally, sensitive information such as product launches or discontinuation of existing products are omitted but, in this case, some information regarding the PS4 Neo managed to slip through.
A translation of the press release found at Boursier.com mentioned the following:
The current year should be marked for the video game world by the arrival, in the first half of our fiscal year, an evolution of the Sony PS4 console with the Neo 4K with new features and that the placing on the market in October 2016 virtual reality helmet Sony VR.
In the hours since the original publishing of its press release, Innelec has scrambled to officially deny its original statement. The translation of Innelec Multimedia"s revised stance reads:
Innelec denies any official information about the launch of a PS4K Neo.
It is possible that during the 2016/2017 fiscal developments exist on the current PS4 without for the moment we have no information about the nature of them.
If the PS4 Neo is in fact slated for release around October 2016 then it would not be a major surprise that Sony has begun communicating with its distribution channels around the world. While companies do make errors in press releases, one could reasonably assume that Innelec Multimedia know more than they are now letting on in this specific circumstance.
The backflip comes after more details recently came to light regarding the PS4 Neo and its planned coexistence with the existing PS4.
