Manhattan DA: the iPhone is the terrorists' device of choice

Hopefully them terrorists keep using Apple Maps!

Ever since iOS 7 shipped and had device encryption turned on by default, many have criticized Apple and others that have followed its example, for supposedly impeding law-enforcement efforts and helping criminals avoid the law.

But this week Manhattan’s district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr, reached new heights when he publicly claimed on a radio show that iPhones were helping terrorists. He said:

Apple has created a phone that is dark, that cannot be accessed by law enforcement even when a court has authorized us to look at its contents.

Of course, there was no mention of instances where the iPhone was supposedly used to spy on people without a court having authorized it. In what can only be described as the worst marketing campaign ever, Vance then went on to say that the iPhone was “going to be the terrorists’ communication device of choice”. Readers should also be reminded that we"ve always been at war with Eastasia.

Yes, if it’s not constant instability in the world, lack of jobs and opportunities, lack of education, dubious moral principles and unaddressed mental issues together with a culture of fear mongering that glorifies violence and paints a biased picture of the world that are the real issues – it’s the iPhone and people’s pesky desire for a basic human right to privacy.

It’s not the first time the iPhone came under attack, nor is it the first time that Vance went on a fear-mongering message spreading spree, and with messaging like this, we’re bound to see more and more extreme rhetoric.
