With reports of Mass Effect: Andromeda"s developer being downsized and EA confirming recently that the game will not receive further single-player content or updates, the Mass Effect franchise"s future does not look too bright. However, shedding some light on the matter, EA"s executive vice president Patrick Söderlund shared his views on the sci-fi series" future speaking to GameReactor at gamescom.
According to Söderlund, there is no reason why EA shouldn"t make another Mass Effect entry, as "It"s a spectacular universe, it"s a loved [series], it has a big fanbase, and it"s a game that has done a lot for EA and for BioWare." Adding to that, he said a future title would need to be brought back in a "relevant way, and in a fresh, exciting place". This could mean that the next Mass Effect game may not be an Andromeda sequel continuing its storyline, but something else entirely.
He also had some thoughts to share on the reception that Andromeda received at launch, saying that the criticisms the game faced were more than it deserved, going on to say:
"Well I think, my personal opinion is, I think that the game... I usually don"t do this, but this is one of those places where I feel like the game got criticized a little bit more than it deserved. I think the game is actually a great game. Yes, we have to acknowledge the fact that there were some things that maybe we could have done better, absolutely, but as a whole, if you go in and you buy the game today with everything that"s in it today, I believe that that"s a game worth buying, personally."
While it may be true that the current state of the game is very much improved compared to its launch thanks to a host of post-launch updates, that does not excuse the faults the game had nor the criticisms it faced because of them at launch.
All in all, this does not confirm that another Mass Effect game is in the cards for the publisher, but it may be enough for fans of the series to hang on to. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently developing Anthem, a brand new RPG that was announced during E3 earlier this year. Mass Effect series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic writer, Drew Karpyshyn, is also lending a hand to its development.
