Computerworld is reporting that two women are suing anti-virus creator McAfee for duping them into buying a third party application through a pop up ad.
Apparently after you purchase McAfee"s software you are presented with a pop-up that according to the women appears like a link to start using the software you just purchased. Instead clicking the link will automatically sign you up to purchase another piece of software using your payment information you submitted to McAfee for their products.
"Whenever a McAfee customer completes a purchase on McAfee.com, an ad will appear for a related product or service. Interested customers can choose to subscribe to the product or service using the billing method just entered in their recent McAfee.com purchase," reads Arpu"s site. "This convenience to the customer streamlines the purchase flow and increases the overall conversion rate."
The two women said they were billed $4.95 per month for a service described on their credit card statements as "PERFECTSPD," a reference to the PerfectDisk Live online disk defragmentation service sold by Raxco Software.
If you plan to purchase McAfee software be sure not to click the pop-up ads, you could be billed without even knowing you just purchased something. Stay vigilant people.
