MediaTek unveiled its partnership with Intel last year as a part of their collaboration to build PCs that have MediaTek"s new 5G modem. The new modem is based partially on the Helio M70 5G modem and it will be incorporated into future PCs initially from HP and Dell, set to arrive in early 2021.
Today, MediaTek announced a new development of that partnership. The fabless semiconductor firm has formally introduced its new 5G modem called the T700 5G that will be used for next-generation PCs powered by Intel. It supports non-standalone and standalone sub-6GHz networks. In addition, the new modem was recently tested for 5G standalone calls in real world settings.
Regarding the new development, Chris Walker, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Client Platforms at Intel, said:
“A successful partnership is measured by execution, and we’re excited to see the rapid progress we are making with MediaTek on our 5G modem solution with customer sampling starting later this quarter. Building on our 4G/LTE leadership in PCs, 5G is poised to further transform the way we connect, compute and communicate. Intel is committed to enhancing those capabilities on the world’s best PCs."
For its part, Intel has recently made progress in its work to integrate the T700 5G into Intel-powered laptops and develop platform optimizations. Additionally, Intel is preparing co-engineering support for its partner OEMs.
