As wearable technology matures into smaller and thinner devices, chip-makers are also getting in on the action, and today MediaTek has unveiled what it calls a "system-in-package" (SIP) in the form of the MT2523 for activity- and fitness-focused smart watches.
The chip combines GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth Low Energy, and a MIPI-supported high-resolution mobile screen in a small, but powerful package. MediaTek claims that "devices powered by MT2523 can last more than a week on one battery charge." The whole package is also 41 percent smaller than what the competition is currently using.
The chip is powered by an ARM Cortex-M4 processor, which combines low component cost and power use with high efficiency. The SiP will become available to manufacturers in the first half of this year.
