Meizu unveils three new devices in the '15 series', come with no notch

The notch design may be increasingly becoming ubiquitous in almost every smartphone nowadays following the debut of Apple"s iPhone X, but a Chinese phone maker is defying that trend. Zhuhai-based Meizu has announced three new mobile device offerings without a notch: the Meizu 15, Meizu 15 Plus, and Meizu 15 Lite.

Ard Boudeling, Meizu"s head of global marketing, unveiled the Meizu 15 on Twitter:

The Meizu 15 sports a 5.46-inch 1080p OLED Full HD display, the Meizu 15 Plus a 5.95-inch 1440p OLED Quad HD screen, and the Meizu 15 Lite a 5.46-inch 1080p LCD. It is important to note, perhaps, that the OLED panels are supplied by Samsung Display.

Under the hood, the 15 model is powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor and packs 4GB of RAM and a 3,000mAh battery. The Lite variant is powered by a Snapdragon 626 chipset and ships with the same size of RAM and battery as the basic model. Meanwhile, the Plus variant comes with a Samsung Exynos 8895 octa-core processor, Mali-G71 GPU, 6GB of RAM, and a 3,500mAh battery equipped with Meizu"s mCharge 4.0 Flash Charger.

On the optics side of things, both the 15 and Plus models boast a dual 20-megapixel and 12-megapixel rear camera setup with a large aperture of f/1.8, brought by the IMX 380 camera light sensor coupled with optical image stabilization and multi-frame noise reduction. The Lite model, on the other hand, includes only a single 12-megapixel rear camera. The Meizu 15 series also shows off 20-megapixel selfie shooters on the front and includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Meizu 15 series runs on Meizu"s proprietary Android-based Flyme 7 skin and ships with a fingerprint sensor that Boudeling claims will unlock the devices in 0.08 seconds using a mix of a pressure sensitivity system and haptic feedback. The 15 and Plus models will come in black and blue color options and the Lite variant in black, gold, and red. The new range of Meizu smartphones also includes support for facial recognition that the company says can unlock the handsets in 0.1 seconds.

All three devices will be initially available in China at a retail price of 2,500 yuan ($396.5) for the Meizu 15, 1,700 yuan ($269.6) for the Lite model, and 3,000 yuan ($475.8) for the Plus variant. Meizu has yet to announce if and when the phones will hit other markets beyond its home country.
