Microsoft announced it had acquired the business-themed social networking service Yammer for $1.2 billion last summer, and Yammer became part of Microsoft"s Office division. This week, Microsoft offered a small update on how Yammer is doing, along with a change that will affect some Yammer team members.
In a post on the Office blog, Microsoft stated that for the quarter that ended on March 31 (the company"s fiscal third quarter of 2013), Yammer sales increased by 259 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Specific sales numbers were not mentioned, but Microsoft did say that Yammer added 312 new customers during the quarter. It also said, "March marked Yammer"s best month to-date in terms of user engagement."
Microsoft also announced that the 100 Yammer sales employees would be integrated with Microsoft"s Office sales teams later this summer. This was expected as Yammer services will begin their own integration with Office 365 around the same time. The first step will allow Office 365 users to replace their SharePoint newsfeed with the one used by the Yammer service. The SharePoint newsfeed will continue to be the default for Office 365 as some businesses may not wish to move to a cloud-based service.
