Microsoft: 5.5 million downloads of Visual Studio 2012 since launch

Microsoft launched Visual Studio 2012 for MSDN and TechNet subscribers in August 2012 and for everyone else a month later. As we await the official launch of the next version, Visual Studio 2013, Microsoft has revealed some rather impressive download numbers for the current version.

In a post on his Microsoft blog, S. Somasegar, the corporate vice president of the Developer Division at Microsoft, stated, "Visual Studio 2012 continues to be the most downloaded release of Visual Studio with over 5.5M downloads to date." Since it launched, Microsoft released three major updates to the software and the company plans to release a fourth and final Visual Studio 2012 update sometime before the end of the year.

Of course, Microsoft is close to launching the next version, Visual Studio 2013, and MSDN and TechNet users can download the RTM build on October 18th. However, the official launch will happen a few weeks later on November 13th. Prices for the various SKUs will remain the same as those for Visual Studio 2012. Developers who currently own Visual Studio 2012 Professional will be able to purchase a Visual Studio Professional 2013 Upgrade for $99 from November 1st to January 31st, 2014 and for $299 afterwards.
