Microsoft accidentally allowed 200 devices to install cancelled Windows 10 Mobile build 10536

Last week, Microsoft’s Gabe Aul asked the Windows Insider community if the company should release new Windows 10 Mobile build 10536, despite a known issue affecting the Store app. The community responded in favor of pushing it out, and Aul said it would be released on Friday.

What you should see when checking for new builds, now that 10536 has been pulled

But on Friday, he revealed that a show-stopping bug had been discovered in that build at the last minute – an issue that would have caused problems upgrading to future builds. As a result, 10536 was scrapped, and Aul said that a new build was being lined up for release this week.

However, it soon emerged that some users may have actually received build 10536 by mistake, and now, Microsoft has acknowledged as much. Aul said today that around 200 people were able to install the build before it was pulled:

@Fetandrey Yes, there about 200 installs of 10536.1003. We were staging to release and a few successful scans happened before pulling.

It seems that Microsoft was very near indeed to ‘pushing the button’ for the release of build 10536 before the issue was identified, and its launch cancelled - in fact, it got so close to that full rollout, that some users who were checking for updates were able to grab it while it was being prepped for launch, before it was finally pulled.

It"s not yet clear if the 200 or so devices on which 10536 was successfully installed will be able to easily install future Windows 10 Mobile previews, given the bug that was discovered in that build.

Microsoft hasn’t yet said exactly which build will replace 10536 as its new candidate for release to Windows Insiders, or on which day it will be made available. But its most recent build arrived over a month ago, and with Windows 10 Mobile’s launch now just weeks away, Microsoft will no doubt want to get a new preview into users’ hands as soon as possible.
