In its continuing efforts to bring 3D to its many users of Windows 10 around the world, Microsoft has acquired Simplygon, a Swedish firm.
Developing automatic 3D optimization solutions, the firm was developed by Donya Labs, which was founded in 2006. Today, Simplygon helps creators and users of 3D Data across industries to "optimize content pipelines and streamline their workflows."
The company expressed their enthusiasm and excitement with the acquisition. They stated:
"Throughout our journey, we’ve been laser focused on helping developers push the boundaries of 3D. From our early days delivering advanced level-of-detail solutions, to the adoption of Simplygon SDK by most leading AAA game development studios, and our more recent expansion into enterprise AR/VR, Simplygon has made automatic 3D data-optimization increasingly more accessible to developers. Our next challenge is 3D For Everyone, the ultimate accessibility! We’re thrilled to join forces with Microsoft to make this happen."
Moving forward, it is very apparent that this move will be used towards Microsoft"s goals of strengthening its 3D goals for Windows 10, which was initially envisioned in the Creators Update. It introduced efforts like a Paint 3D app, and online creator community Remix 3D. These creations can then be interacted with using Microsoft HoloLens.
