Research firm Net Applications showed a two percent rise in the worldwide OS market share for Windows 8 during the month of August. This week, Microsoft"s Tami Reller confirmed that the company saw its own rise in new activations of Windows 8 devices during that same month.
While the company did not disclose any numbers, a post on the official Windows blog states that Reller, in an address during the Intel Developer Forum, indicated that new PCs purchased for the back-to-school season were a big reason for the increase in new Windows 8 activations. In May, Microsoft said it had sold 100 million licenses for Windows 8 but did not disclose specific activation stats.
Reller also talked about the upcoming PCs that will have Windows 8.1 installed out of the box during her IDF address, along with company"s team up with Best Buy to launch a Microsoft "store within a store" at hundreds of Best Buy retail locations this fall. Finally, Reller also talked about Microsoft"s efforts to get both enterprise and consumer customers who still use Windows XP to be aware that the support cut off date for the 12 year old OS is coming up on April 8th, 2014.
