Microsoft rolled out a new update to its Skype UWP app for Fast ring users, that introduces a much needed graphical update. Fluent Design, as it is called, gives the interface a unique translucent "acrylic blur" effect in the left sidebar. This new design language was first introduced to the general public in the Fall Creators Update, which rolled out in October.
The version sporting this new upgrade is currently available for download from the Microsoft Store - currently exclusive to those in the Fast ring - with Skype version 12.10.534.0. For users on the current public build of the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft added a number of other improvements including the following in version 12.9.604.0 of the app:
- Stay on top of your day with help from the notification panel. Quickly jump back into conversations to see reactions to your messages and @ mentions.
- Express how you feel during a call with emoticon, text or photo reactions.
- Share your virtual world and activity with others over a Skype video call in Windows Mixed Reality.
Earlier this month Microsoft announced that users of its Skype service will no longer be able to sign-in using their Facebook accounts. This feature will fall away in an update to be released in January next year, after which you will be required to sign-in using your Microsoft Account (MSA), like with all its other services.
