Microsoft announces dark mode is coming to the Microsoft 365 suite

Yesterday, Microsoft employees began teasing what appeared to be the arrival of a dark mode for the Office mobile apps, promising more details would be revealed today. Right on schedule, the company has announced that dark mode will not only be rolling out to the Outlook app for iOS and Android, but it will also be coming to more of the Microsoft 365 suite of products.

In a blog post published today, Microsoft"s Jon Friedman talks about the motivations behind the introduction of dark mode and the process of creating it. Friedman also reveals that dark mode is rolling out to Outlook for iOS and Android, as well as Office.com, starting today.

Later this year, when Apple releases iOS 13 - which includes a system-wide dark mode - Microsoft will bring a dark mode to more of its mobile apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and To-Do. Google is also introducing a system-wide dark mode with Android 10, and Microsoft says its apps will follow the system settings on both platforms.

Further down the line, Microsoft plans to expand dark mode to more of its Microsoft 365 products, such as Planner and OneDrive on the web. You can check out dark mode across platforms and products in the video above.
