Microsoft announces limited preview of Office 365 adoption content pack for Power BI

Over the last couple of years, Microsoft has gradually built up the capability and availability of its Power BI product. Back at the start of this year, the company released Power BI for Windows 10 PCs and tablets after having released mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows 10 Mobile. More recently, Microsoft enabled the ability to embed Power BI analytics inside independently developed applications as well as public websites.

Now, Microsoft is looking to help Office 365 administrators better understand the usage patterns of their users with the "Office 365 adoption content pack" for Power BI.

The main dashboard provides a view of four key areas:

  • adoption, identifying the number of active, first time, and returning users by product
  • communication, tracking email, Skype and Yammer utilization metrics
  • collaboration, measuring the use of OneDrive and SharePoint for document sharing and storage
  • activation, providing a view of activations across users, including the number and type of devices

Office 365 administrators will also be able to create, customize and share reports, optionally leveraging Active Directory attributes. With the ability to pivot data according to location, department, and organization, admins can more easily identify where user training and communications may be of most benefit.

The adoption content pack is available now as a limited preview, with an estimated lead time of between two to three weeks for data preparation. Applications, which close on October 16, must be sent via e-mail to O365usagePowerBIPreview@service.microsoft.com, including your tenant ID.

However, if you prefer to wait until the production release, Microsoft has advised that the Office 365 adoption content pack for Power BI will "become available for all customers to opt in by the end of December."
