You might recall that in late March when Windows head Terry Myerson announced that he"s leaving Microsoft, he said that Windows 10 is installed on nearly 700 million devices. Microsoft had the same message last month at its Build 2018 developer conference, but today at the Windows Insider Dev Tour, the firm finally stated that there are over 700 million active Windows 10 devices, as spotted by Michael Gillett.
As usual, this number includes PC, phones, Xbox One consoles, HoloLens, and anything else that runs Windows 10. As you can see from the image below, the rate of adoption really hasn"t changed since the free upgrade offer ended on July 29, 2016.
According to the latest AdDuplex report, half of the total Windows 10 PCs are running the latest version, which is 1803, or the April 2018 Update.
Another notable number is that Cortana is now in use by over 150 million people, and that"s only in 13 countries. Indeed, the availability of Microsoft"s digital assistant has been quite problematic for users in many regions. The number is a moderate increase from the 148 million that was reported back in October.
Microsoft"s original goal for Windows 10 was to have it installed on over a billion devices within two to three years. A year later, it announced that it was abandoning that goal, blaming the failing phone business that it put minimal effort into. But the three-year mark will be on July 29, which is less than two months away, so it would seem that the final number before then is 700 million.
Update: Much like the original announcement at Build, this was once again a mistake by Microsoft.
