Microsoft announced in a blog post today the first major update to Windows Holographic. The May 2016 update brings a number of new features, although the additions are fairly basic, showing how much work is needed before bringing the HoloLens to the consumer market.
Here are the highlights of the update:
Multi-tasking – With this update, you can run multiple applications at the same time.
Input – You can now connect a regular Bluetooth mouse to your HoloLens device. In addition, the clicker has been fine-tuned to enable resizing and moving of holograms.
Voice – We’ve added new commands. Find out what happens when you gaze at a hologram and say “Face me!”
Edge – Edge now supports many of your feature requests such as tabs.
Photos – The Photos app has been updated to support pinning of pictures without any borders or chrome. Your walls will never look the same.
You can also head over to the release notes to find a long list of new features and fixes.
The HoloLens Development Edition began shipping its first wave just over two months ago. While the second wave is shipping now, there are currently at least five waves in total, so if you"re hoping for the consumer version to be released soon, it"s going to be a while.
Windows Holographic is the version of Windows 10 that powers the HoloLens, but any OEM can license it to make its own device. It"s interesting to watch the software come into its own, as there will certainly be more to come in the upcoming months.
