Razer has been branching out lately from its core PC gaming accessories products to full fledged PC hardware; first with the Razer Blade notebook and most recently with the Windows 8-based Razer Edge gaming PC tablet, which is currently available for pre-order.
This week, Razer announced a rather interesting new development. In a press release, the company revealed that Rahul Sood, currently the head of Microsoft"s Bing Fund startup investment group, is now also going to be an advisor to Razer"s board of directors. The announcement said:
Sood will provide strategic counsel on all aspects of Razer"s business, from global operations to sales, marketing and product development, as the brand continues to evolve its business in the United States and abroad.
Prior to working for Microsoft, Sood launched the VoodooPC gaming PC business, which was later bought by HP. Min-Liang Tan, the CEO of Razer, cited VoodooPC as one of the company"s inspirations for launching its own gaming PC hardware products. Sood added that he has admired Razer for many years and said, "I see Razer as the spiritual successor to our previous work at VoodooPC."
Sood is still working at Microsoft as head of the Bing Fund. The big question: Is Sood"s advisory role at Razer a possible prelude to an even deeper relationship between Microsoft and Razer? Hmmm ...
