Microsoft closes Microtropolis in NYC due to Hurricane Sandy

A week ago today, Microsoft launched the Microtropolis art exhibit at Pier 57 in the Manhattan borough of New York City. It was located at the same site as the company"s Windows 8 launch event. It was supposed to say open though Saturday, November 3rd.

However, the company has now confirmed that the elaborate art exhibit will now be permanently closed due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, which hit the city and the entire US Northeastern seaboard on Monday. In a statement on the company"s official blog, Microsoft said:

We are grateful to New York City and the pier for hosting us, however the unprecedented circumstances caused by hurricane Sandy have made it impossible for us to reopen again. Our hearts are with anyone who’s been affected by this storm. We hope we can all bounce back quickly and get New York moving again.

The Microtropolis exhibit allowed the few people who got a chance to see it a way to walk through a 160 foot version of Manhattan Island and learn more about the city via tons of PCs using Microsoft"s Windows 8 and Windows RT OS. It was an elaborate, and likely expensive, set up that now sadly won"t get the attention it deserved.
