Computex is being held this week in Taipei, and that means that there have been plenty of Windows 10 PCs announced. As we"re nearing the end of the conference, Microsoft has published its usual blog post recapping the devices that its partners announced.
But in the blog post, the firm also talked about its vision for a modern operating system. Microsoft said that for new, modern devices, we"ll need a modern OS. The company outlined some ideas for the modern OS, never once mentioning Windows 10.
Microsoft referred to enablers and delighters. The first thing, and one of the most important for many consumers, is that a modern OS has seamless updates. These updates are "invisibly done in the background", with no interruptions.
The company also said that a modern OS is secure by default. That means that the operating system and other components, like apps, are separated. Microsoft also talked about being always connected, including seamless transitions from Wi-Fi to cellular, and this is notable considering that Lenovo just announced a 5G PC.
Microsoft used the phrase "multi-sense" to describe various methods of input, such as pen, voice, touch, and gaze. And of course, "form factor agility" is important, as Microsoft wants to continue to expand the variety of PCs out there.
But again, the company never actually said that it"s talking about Windows 10, and a lot of these things don"t really apply to Windows 10. There are no seamless updates on Windows 10; not even close. And apps are most certainly not separated from the OS, unless you get them from the Store.
It"s more likely that Microsoft is talking about Windows Core OS, the version of Windows that"s much more modern than the one we currently know. It already exists on the HoloLens 2 and has been shown off on the Surface Hub 2X, but Microsoft hasn"t talked about it in public yet.
