Earlier this year, we reported that Microsoft brought its Remote Desktop Preview app to Windows 10. The new app, though a preview version, was built on the Universal Windows Platform, allowing users to connect from various devices including desktops, laptops, tablets, and phones. One of the app"s defining features was support for Continuum, which brings a traditional PC experience to Windows 10 Mobile users.
Microsoft has since announced a full version of the app, which will be distributed automatically in the following weeks to users who previously downloaded the Windows 8.1 version in Windows 10. Users who upgrade to the full version should expect the following changes:
- Desktop connections are preserved
- User names are preserved
- Passwords need to be re-entered
- Gateways are preserved
- Remote resources URLs are preserved from Windows Phone 8.1 but require new sign in
- Remote resources are not preserved from Windows 8.1 and need to be re-added
- Some general settings are preserved
The new app also drops features that were included in the Windows 8.1 version, including:
- Multiple simultaneous connections
- Dynamic resolution and rotation
- Printer redirection
- Smartcard redirection
- Microphone support
- Localized app (currently English only)
Microsoft recommends users who need the missing features to "use the Remote Desktop Connections app (MSTSC) which ships in Windows." Users who desire these features should also leave feedback so they may be implemented in the future.
While a full version of the Remote Desktop app has been developed, a separate Preview version will be maintained by Microsoft so users can provide feedback and have early access to new features. Both versions of the app can exist at the same time on a single machine.
At this time it is not known when the new app will be made available for download, but users of the previous versions can expect an upgrade soon.
