When Microsoft formally announced its new Edge web browser in late April - after months of development under its "Project Spartan" codename - the company released a video showing the browser in action. However, five months on, one particular feature that appeared in that promo vid still isn"t available on Edge itself - but it soon will be.
The feature in question is known as "tab preview", and as WinBeta reports, Microsoft"s Joe Belfiore discussed it recently while on stage at the company"s Ignite New Zealand conference. Tab preview allows the user to glance at other open, but inactive, tabs in the browser by hovering the cursor over the tab itself. It"s hardly a killer feature, but it is a nice addition, and its arrival will close another gap in Edge"s feature set - albeit a fairly small one.
Belfiore didn"t say exactly when the feature will be baked into Edge - but for the seven million people who have been testing Windows 10 in recent months, there"s still some good news to hold on to. While not revealing a precise date, he did say that tab preview "is coming to our Insider builds really soon".
Belfiore"s comments were made on September 1 - though not reported until yesterday - just a few days after the release of the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview, build 10532. It"s not clear when Microsoft plans to release its next preview build, but unless something has changed since September 1, it seems likely that it will include the new tab preview feature in Edge.
Of course, that"s not the only feature that"s missing from Edge. Along with upcoming support for the open-source VP9 video format, Microsoft also plans to add extensions support to Edge, most likely as part of its "Threshold Wave 2" update for Windows 10, which is expected to roll out around late October or early November.
