Microsoft introduced "Aero Snap" in Windows 7 and it quickly became a quick, new and convenient way to organize windows on the fly. While not much has changed in Windows 8, Microsoft intends to highlight "Snap" by expanding and evolving the feature in Windows 10.
In Windows 10, Microsoft will be introducing three distinct new ways to "Snap" windows. "Snap Assist" made its debut late last year and will allow users to snap the window just like before, but will now present a list of recently used windows for easy selection. Previously, users had to search for windows to snap together, but Snap Assist will make better use of the users time by presenting a most recently used windows list that can be snapped. While it might seem like a small detail, this will undoubtedly increase productivity and decease frustration when working with multiple windows.
"Snap Corner" will be introduced to accommodate those that currently use larger displays. Snap Corner will take better advantage of screen real estate by creating window layouts that can be be sized to take a quarter of the screen. This will also allow for some new combinations of windows like the one seen above.
Lastly, "Snap Fill" will take the intelligence of self-filling windows to a new level by monitoring how the user expands and contracts windows for specific applications. When snapping in Windows 10, the OS will take into account what apps are being snapped and fill them accordingly for the most optimal view. This feature will attempt to create the most optimal viewing experience based on the users preference.
Although the release of Windows 10 is imminent, Microsoft is still releasing updated builds for the "Windows Insider" program in preparation for an official summer release. If you are currently using Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, you should have received a prompt to reserve your copy of Windows 10 last month. If you haven"t done so, it"s recommended to reserve your copy as the promotional upgrade for free will only available for the first year.
