If you want to make an app for Windows 8 or 8.1 and you want to have it reach the most people, Microsoft says that the Games category might be your best bet. In a new blog post, Microsoft stated that the Games category of Windows 8/8.1 apps had the highest number of downloads in the Windows Store between August 1st and October 31st.
In fact, the blog adds that the Games section of the Windows Store has three times the number of downloads as the number two category, Entertainment. However, when it comes to the category that has the biggest number of downloads per app, the winner for that same time period is Social, which has two times the number of per app downloads compared to the second place section, Photos.
Microsoft says:
As you compare the first and second graphs in this blog, you can see different trends and new potential opportunities. For example, the Games category has the highest number of downloads, but also has many more apps in the catalog so the competition is higher. As a result, there is a lower number of average downloads per app in Games than in Productivity or Photos.
Specific download numbers for each category were not revealed. Last week, Microsoft said that paid game downloads in the Windows Store went up 34.12 percent for the month of November and free game downloads were up 13.41 percent.
