Our regular readers may recall that, last year, indie developer Andrew Peterson brought a selection of retro games to Microsoft"s mixed reality HoloLens headset, including Donkey Kong, Zelda 2, Tetris, and the classic Super Mario Bros.
Peterson, who also created the N3S emulator for Windows, added the games to HoloLens as playable "windows" that could be virtually positioned in the real world, but now another developer has taken things to a whole new level.
28-year-old developer Abhishek Singh brought Super Mario Bros. to the real world on a much larger scale, recreating a level from the game at life-size in New York City"s Central Park. To demonstrate his awesome creation in all its glory, he played the game in the park while wearing a HoloLens headset and dressed as the world"s most famous plumber.
Singh, who is currently on a one-year residency at NYU after graduating from there last year, told UploadVR that it had taken him around a month to put everything together using the Unity dev tools:
I also had to model all the assets and elements of the game and at times rethink the experience and gameplay to work in a real-world 3D setting. The most time was probably spent on tweaking the game to work in a large outdoor environment. It still has a few quirks but is definitely playable. The final level was more than 110m long!
He added that the limited field of view offered by HoloLens wasn"t a big deal when playing the game, "since all the action tends to start happening further out in front of you". You can check out Singh"s remarkable creation - and his Mario outfit - in the video below:
