Microsoft"s head of Xbox, Don Mattrick, has come out an suggested that the Xbox 360, Microsoft"s seven-year-old game console, is a suitable replacement for the Xbox One when you don"t have an internet connection. Specifically, to Spike TV he said:
...fortunately we have a product for people who aren"t able to get some form of connectivity, it"s called Xbox 360 [...] if you have zero access to the internet, that is an offline device
Mattrick also remarked that making the Xbox One always connected to the internet is a "future-proof choice", and that consumers will understand the link between games and entertainment with the next-generation console. He didn"t make any mention of situations where people may not have stable, reliable or easy connections to the internet, such as in rural communities or troops serving in the armed forces overseas.
The comments follow Microsoft"s controversial announcement that the Xbox One must connect to the internet once every 24 hours to provide access to games, which has caused many people to dismiss the One as their next-generation console of choice. Sony announced at their E3 2013 conference that the PlayStation 4 would not need to connect to the internet to play disc-based games, which was received with a standing ovation by the audience.
