With the release of the Windows 10 April 2018 update only a few days ago, Microsoft has revealed that it is blocking the installation of this update on a few Alienware notebooks. The models currently facing the update block are the Alienware 13 R3, Alienware 15 R3, Alienware 15 R4, Alienware 17 R4, and Alienware 17 R5.
Apparently, the aforementioned devices might display a black screen when resumed from battery saving mode if allowed to undergo the April update. When attempting to install the update, the affected users face an error message stating:
"You’ll need to remove these apps yourself, and then select Refresh. These programs need to be uninstalled because they aren"t compatible with the upgrade – Hybrid laptops with discrete GPU connected to display."
A moderator on Microsoft"s support forums, Jess Can, has clarified that the black screen issue is a known bug and the reason why the upgrade block has been initiated. Can has further stated that a fix can be expected with a future Windows update, though no official date has been mentioned as of yet. It has also been emphasized that no programs need to be uninstalled by the affected users, contrary to what is mentioned in the original error message.
Meanwhile, on the "Alienware" Reddit discussion, a Product Specialist, Umar Khan, has further revealed that the block can be expected to be lifted around the fourth week of May. He has gone on to list an unofficial solution tested on ""various systems"" for those users who are unwilling to wait that long. The fix reads as follows:
- Uninstall all GPU drivers
- Disable the GPU in Management.
- Go into airplane mode
- Restart the PC
- Use the update wizard NOT the Windows 10 Update tool.
- Turn off airplane mode and begin downloading.
- Turn it back on when the download is complete.
Bear in mind that Microsoft has recommended users to avoid any workarounds, and instead wait for the official fix to be released. Therefore, you should only implement the unofficial solution listed above at your own risk.
