Microsoft is celebrating the release of Crackdown 3 by making the original title free

Almost three years after the game was initially slated to launch, Crackdown 3 will finally hit stores next week, a day after Valentine"s Day. In order to celebrate the auspicious occasion, Microsoft has announced that it will be making the original Crackdown title from 2007 free.

You can grab the game from the Xbox Live Marketplace here for the Xbox 360. If you"re using Microsoft"s latest generation console, the company"s backward compatibility program will allow you to enjoy the title on an Xbox One, as well.

Microsoft is hoping that once you"ve tried your hand at the original, you will also want to check out the upcoming third installment in the series, which can also be pre-ordered on the Microsoft Store for $59.99.

The original Crackdown was known for its sandbox experience, and Microsoft has promised to double down on that experience for the new title. Using the power of cloud computing, Microsoft and developer Sumo Digital are touting an entirely unique experience with a degree of destructibility never seen before in a video game.

The title will be available on both Xbox One and PCs. If you own a Game Pass subscription, Microsoft has also promised to make the game available for you to download as soon as it launches.
