Today, Microsoft is announcing a new Kids Mode for its Edge browser. It"s just what it sounds like, a way to make the web browsing experience safer for children. It"s designed for 5-8 and 9-12 age groups.
There are a few key things included. One is Bing SafeSearch, which is meant to make sure that kids receive "friendly content". There"s also a built-in allow list that"s pre-defined, but can be edited from the parent"s profile. Also included in Kids Mode are kid-friendly articles, custom browser themes, and tracking prevention, which is set to Strict.
Accessing Kids Mode is pretty simple, as you can get there via the profile picker in Edge. Not only that, but the kid doesn"t even need a Child MSA or to be part of a family group. After all, since there"s no tracking and no ads being shown on the new tab page, there"s really no reason to require any kind of Microsoft account. To switch out of Kids Mode and to an adult profile, you"ll need to enter a password.
Kids Mode is going live today in the Canary channel, although Microsoft says that it"s coming to the Dev channel soon. As usual, Microsoft wants to collect feedback on this, and it"s going to "add and finesse" different features before it goes live for everyone.
