Microsoft has announced today that it has bought SyntaxTree, the developers behind the UnityVS plugin for Visual Studio. The plugin was created to help developers take advantage of the Unity engine inside the Visual Studio environment.
There are now more than 2 million developers using the Unity game engine, so this acquisition is a move to make sure those developers have excellent support with Visual Studio. This is not simply an IP purchase either, Microsoft is on-boarding the SyntaxTree team that worked on UnityVS plugin and they will be joining the Visual Studio group to continue working on this project.
Microsoft’s Visual Studio is a key component to many developers" workflow. With the company constantly rolling out new updates to the tool, the SyntaxTree acquisition is one more component to making sure the Visual Studio is the best product on the market for all types of developers.

With this acquisition, we have the opportunity to integrate this support for Unity even more deeply into Visual Studio, and to continue to push forward Visual Studio"s support for game developers.
In addition to the acquisition, Microsoft will be making the existing UnityVS plugin available for free.
