Microsoft launches new Flixster Xbox 360 app

Microsoft may be planning to announce a successor to the Xbox 360 later this spring (maybe) but the company continues to support the seven year old console with new features and media apps. Today, Microsoft announced that the newest Xbox 360 app, Flixster, is available for download for Xbox Live Gold members.

In a post on the Major Nelson website, Microsoft says the Flixster app allows users to download and rent or purchase standard or HD movies. It also lets users view trailers and information for upcoming movies in theaters and on DVD, with movie ratings provided by the popular Rotten Tomatoes website. People who own movies that they can access via the UltraViolet cloud service can also view their library via the Flixster app, which additionally supports Kinect for motion gesture and voice interaction. The app is available for U.S. Xbox Live users only.

The Flixster Xbox 360 app joins the many other movie streaming apps available for the console, including Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Crackle, HBO Go, Amazon Instant Video, Redbox Instant, and others. It"s likely that we will see even more of these apps available for the next Xbox console, which is rumored to launch by the end of 2013.
