Microsoft launches new TV ad to promote Windows 8.1 apps

With just a few weeks to go before Christmas arrives, Microsoft wants consumers to know that when they buy a new Windows 8.1 touchscreen PC, they will also be able to access over 125,000 apps from the Windows Store. On Monday, Microsoft released its latest TV commercial for "the new Windows" that spotlights a number of its more popular third party apps and games.

The highly stylised commercial, as posted on YouTube, shows that the Windows Store has apps such as Wikipedia, ESPN, Kayak, and Facebook, which is currently the most popular free app in the store. It also shows Windows 8.1 users can download popular games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds Star Wars.

In a post on the official Windows blog, Microsoft also confirmed a previously reported promotional offer that will give consumers who buy a Windows 8.1 tablet or touch PC a free $25 Windows gift card that can be used to buy apps and content from the store. Retailers that are participating in the offer include Amazon, Best Buy, Fry’s Electronics, Staples, Newegg, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart.com and of course the Microsoft Store. The promotion ends on December 28th and the free gift card must be redeemed by February 28th. Once the card is redeemed, users have 120 days to spend the allocated funds before they disappear.
