Microsoft makes it easier to convert Chrome extensions for Edge with new tool

While extensions for Microsoft Edge have been available to Insiders for the past five months through Windows 10 preview build 14291, the feature has now become publicly available to all those who have installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It now appears that the company is working on making it easier to convert Chrome extensions for Edge, with a new app in the Windows Store.

The application, which is named as "Microsoft Edge Extension Toolkit", is available for download in the Windows Store. The tool is described as follows:

This toolkit allows developers to convert a Chrome extension to run on Microsoft Edge in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (14393.10) edition. The tool creates the necessary JSON manifest entries and bridges the chrome. *APIs to the browser.*

APIs supported on Microsoft Edge, polyfiling where necessary.

It is important to note that with extensions now supported in Microsoft Edge with the release of Window 10 Anniversary Update, this tool could pave the way for a number of Chrome extensions being converted for compatibility with Edge. Currently, a handful of extensions support Microsoft"s Edge browser, including AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, LastPass, Amazon Assistant, Office Online, Pin It Button, and Evernote Web Clipper, among others. Downloading them from the Windows Store is as simple as downloading an app.

While the app appears to be in early stages - and hasn"t even been formally announced by Microsoft as of yet - it seems to be functional, providing developers the ability to load extensions from folders, re-validate them and view bug reports.
