Microsoft offers details on next TypeScript updates up to 1.0

One year ago, Microsoft launched the first public preview version of TypeScript, which was created to enable applications to scale using JavaScript. In June, Microsoft released version 0.9 of TypeScript with a number of new features. This week, the company revealed a roadmap that will include two more major releases before the 1.0 version is made available.

In a post on the TypeScript blog, Microsoft revealed that TypeScript 0.9.1.1 was added as part of Visual Studio 2013 RC in order to receive some feedback from users of the software development tool. Now that Visual Studio 2013 has reached RTM status, users of the software can get the latest TypeScript version by clicking the “Install the Latest TypeScript for Visual Studio” link as shown in the screenshot above.

Some of the next goals towards releasing version 1.0 include making sure the compiler is reliable and that future upgrades will work with existing code once 1.0 is launched. The next major release of TypeScript will be version 0.9.5. Microsoft states:

The focus of 0.9.5 is resolving user-reported issues and setting a high quality bar.  This is also when we expect to have the 1.0 TypeScript Spec candidate ready.  This spec candidate will detail the complete TypeScript 1.0 language, and we’ll also document what parts of the implementation still need to be completed to finish alignment as well as enumerate the breaking changes from the previous version.

After that comes the release of TypeScript 1.0RC which will be made to fix any further reliability issues and to get the compiler alignment to work with the 1.0 language spec. The 1.0 release is of course the next update that will take TypeScript out of preview mode. No release dates for any of these versions were announced.
