Microsoft posted up the first details of Office Mix a few weeks ago and now the company has officially launched their new online service to the public, which is designed to turn regular PowerPoint slides into interactive lessons or presentations.
In a post on the Office blog, Microsoft said that they came up with Office Mix after hearing from teachers. They told the company that creating online lessons could become difficult, as well as expensive, with current tools. The company came up with a way to use PowerPoint as the basis for a service that solves both problems with these kinds of presentations.
The blog states:
Office Mix adds functionality to PowerPoint 2013 that allows you to record audio or video of yourself presenting, write on your slides as you speak to them, insert quizzes, polls, online videos, and more. In fact, you can even do full screen capture and record anything on your PC. Once your presentation is ready, just click “Upload,” and we will work our magic to transform your presentation into a mix. You choose when and with whom to share it.
Microsoft says that the teachers who were some of the early pilot users have used it to record and share lectures for students who could not attend classes. The preview version of Office Mix can be accessed right now but it does require Office 2013 SP1 to be installed on a PC first.
