Almost two weeks ago, Microsoft announced that it was going to "reset" the Skip Ahead subset of the Fast ring. That means that anyone who was previously enrolled will no longer receive Windows 10 builds from the ring automatically; they"ll have to re-enroll. Today, the company is opening up enrollment for Skip Ahead again.
Skip Ahead is the only portion of the Windows Insider Program that has limited availability. Because of this, it made sense to let others get involved in testing. Remember, some of the devices enrolled previously might not even be in use anymore.
First announced almost exactly a year ago, Skip Ahead is designed to allow Insiders to test the next version of Windows 10 after the next feature update, while the standard Fast ring still tests the current one. For example, right now, Redstone 5 development is winding down, and Microsoft is focused on bug fixes and polishing it for a public release. The Fast ring will continue to test new Redstone 5 builds until it"s released.
Meanwhile, those that choose to Skip Ahead will get the first taste of the next feature update to Windows 10, codenamed 19H1, as Microsoft is ditching the Redstone codenames. The builds will likely be buggier, but you"ll get the new features sooner.
If you want to enroll in Skip Ahead, go into your Windows Insider Program settings and change your ring.
