Microsoft will launch its first Windows 10 Mobile devices - the Lumia 950 and 950 XL flagships - in the United States this month, and it"s expected to begin rolling out the new OS to existing handsets before the year"s end.
Exactly when that process will begin remains unclear, as the company hasn"t yet announced an exact release date - but as WMPU reports, its preparations continued today with the appearance of a new "Software update for Lumia with Windows 10" page on its support site.
As with its earlier Windows Phone 8.x updates, it appears that Microsoft will detail availability of Windows 10 Mobile for specific handsets in each market, periodically updating the site with new additions as availability expands - rather than announcing details for all devices at the same time.
Microsoft has already confirmed the first ten Lumia handsets that will be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile - but availability is likely to vary between markets and carriers, so even if your device is one of those ten, it may not necessarily get the update on day one.
Microsoft maintains that it intends to make the upgrade available for the "majority of Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1", but as previously reported, devices with less than 8GB of onboard storage will not be supported. Handsets that do qualify for the upgrade will need at least 1.5GB of free storage to be able to install the new OS.
