In the five years since Steve Ballmer first showed off the first Surface device in Los Angeles, despite a great deal of skepticism over Microsoft ever being able to break it into the hardware space, fierce competition, and more than a bit of criticism, the Surface line of products has grown tremendously.
Surface quickly turned into a billion-dollar business for Microsoft and what started out as an attempt at a proof-of-concept for how to do 2-in-1s right, and a showcase of the flexibility offered by Windows 8, has now spawned five generations of 2-in-1 devices, alongside a line of laptops and even an all-in-one.
That success, as Tim Golik, Director of Program Management at Microsoft, puts it, is built on the back of a strong culture of innovation and engineering. In one of the closing sessions at Microsoft"s Ignite conference this year, Golik provided an in-depth look at the development of the Surface line, alongside some recollections of his own experiences since he joined the team four years ago.
While he provides far more details than can be covered in this article, if you"re interested in how the Redmond giant went from being a software company to one of the biggest names in the high-end PC market today, you can check out the video above.
