Microsoft continues to have the leading game console in the US, according to new sales reports. The company posted up an update on its official blog site that stated the Xbox 360 had 43 percent of the current generation console market during the month of August 2011. According to info supplied by the NPD Group the Xbox 360 sold 308,000 units in the US during that month. Microsoft said it was the sixth straight month that the Xbox 360 had more than a 40 percent share of the current generation console market.
The company also said that the total revenue for the Xbox 360 business, including the console itself, games and accessories, came in at $232 million for the month of August, the most for any console company. The top two games sold during the month of August were Xbox 360 titles; the sci-fi action RPG Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the sports game NCAA Football 12. Specific unit sales for those games were not announced.
With the normally slow sales months of summer now history, Microsoft has a number of major games due out in the fall and holiday time period. That includes the September 20 release of the Xbox 360 exclusive third person shooter Gears of War 3. In October comes Forza Motorsport 4, the next game in the long running racing simulation series. In November comes Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, a graphical update of the original 2001 shooter. Microsoft also has a number of Kinect-based games due out in the fall including Dance Central 2, Kinect Sports: Season Two and Kinect: Disneyland Adventures. Finally, while it"s not an Xbox 360 exclusive, there are sure to be millions of Xbox 360 gamers who will be purchasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on November 8.
