Microsoft releases new 'Halo 5' campaign footage, confirms dynamic resolution

Microsoft and subsidiary developer 343 Industries have been largely quiet about the campaign in "Halo 5: Guardians" since E3, but now the duo have released more information about the game"s single-player element as well as some new footage from it.

In a post on Halo Waypoint, 343 Industries studio head Josh Holmes writes that "Halo 5" will take gamers "on an epic journey across the galaxy" that will transformer the franchise forever. Campaign footage from "Swords of Sanghelios," seen above, echoes his point, as it displays an ancient world in the series with ruins that a character says predates early human architecture.

Holmes and other 343 Industries staff members featured in the post claim "Halo 5" will feature the franchise"s largest campaign and note that its four-player co-op features make missions much more varied. The group also confirmed the game"s resolution for the first time, noting that it will dynamically adjust to maintain 60 frames per second, similar to "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" on Xbox One.

"In much of the campaign you may be playing at 1080p, but when we want to get really crazy with vehicles, visual effects and combat we can trade some of the resolution in order to maintain the crucial 60fps," wrote Justin Dinges, campaign environment art lead. "Without this system, we would need to either reduce the scale of our most intense combat encounters or lower the quality of content across the game in order to stay at 60 fps at all times."

The new information and footage of "Halo 5" follows other recent promotional releases, including the reveal of the game"s opening cutscene and a new trailer. Most of the recently released materials have focused on the game"s co-op play, though users who play the campaign in its single-player mode will play with three A.I.-controlled characters.

"Halo 5: Guardians" is slated for an Oct. 27 release, exclusively on Xbox One.
