Microsoft releases Office UI Fabric, a framework for developers creating add-ins

Microsoft has announced availability of Office UI Fabric on Github today. According to Microsoft, Office UI Fabric is a mobile-first, responsive framework designed for developers to assist them in creating web-based experienced using the already familiar Office Design Language.

It is being marketed as simple and familiar to use regardless of creating a new add-on or adding new features to existing ones.

Microsoft further states that using simple CSS styles will allow a user to change the interface of their application to be more similar to the rest of the Office suite. This type of styling will assist in ensuring the typography, color and even animations match the rest of the Office suite.

The framework is already being used internally at Microsoft with their range of Office 365 products, which we had previously reported are surpassing Google Apps in enterprise cloud-based adoption, as well as OneDrive.com and Outlook.com.

There are new Office Add-in UX Design Guidelines that clarify any information a developer has when designing their add-ins for the Office suite.

In terms of control, Microsoft has been implementing new features that can be used in Office Add-ins, SharePoint Add-ins and even standalone websites. One example that Microsoft states is the Detailed Persona Card which implements the Persona Card feature in Office UI Fabric and translates it into a bindable control.

Office UI Fabric is available today.
